We’ve been busy the past few months working to spread awareness about the proposed mine on Sheep Creek, at the headwaters of Montana’s Smith River.
In mid November, we joined roughly 50 fishing industry businesses across Montana in a letter to the governor, urging the state to proceed with extreme caution on a proposed copper mine in the headwaters of the Smith River.
The letter was delivered in anticipation of a mine permit application expected to be filed with the Department of Environmental Quality before the end of the year.
According to the letter – signed by fishing retailers, guides, outfitters, and others – “No matter how you slice it, and industrial mine in the headwaters of the Smith River is a gamble for Montana’s sport fishing industry, which generates an estimated $500 million in economic activity each year.”
We’ve been spreading the word via press releases and op-ed columns in Montana papers. Read Thursday’s guest column in the Missoulian here, and stay tuned for a column in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle tomorrow (Saturday, 5 December).
