Our November AFFTA Member of the Month is Alvin Dedeaux, of All Water Guides in Austin, Texas. Alvin spends his days holding true to All Water’s motto: Experience, Knowledge, Stewardship, while chasing bass and other eclectic species in central Texas and along the Texas coast. Here’s what Alvin had to say:
What got you into fishing — and what keeps you involved today?
I have been fishing for as long as I can remember. My grandparents fished, my dad fished, my cousins fished, some of my earliest memories are from fishing trips. I stay involved because it is still the most fun thing I can think of doing. Whether I’m in the boat guiding a couple of clients, or I’m out with my wife and daughters, i can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing.
I got into guiding almost by accident. I was managing a fly shop, the Austin Angler in downtown Austin, Texas, and a lot of our clients were asking for guided trips on our local waters. There were a couple of guide working locally, but no one who was full time. A few of us guys at the Angler started doing trips on our days off and pretty soon we were spending more time on the water than in the shop. When the Austin Angler closed in July of 2004 I just kept switched to guiding full time.
How has AFFTA membership benefitted you?
AFFTA has helped me and all our guides keep in touch with what is going on in the fly fishing industry as well as the great benefits like affordable insurance plans.
What’s one thing you wish AFFTA members knew about All Water?
One thing a lot of people don’t know about All Water Guides is how much variety we have in our Texas fisheries. Bass, trout and saltwater, true year round fishing.
